We use Tableau Online to perform quarterly model performance monitoring reports. It is commonly used in my department and presumedly being wildly used across the entire organization. The business problem that the tool address is the visualization with large data set. It provides interactive graphs with various dashboards and visualization options to select.
  • Quick
  • Interactive
  • Reliable
  • Expensive
  • Unique interface
It is suitable for people without coding background and still prefer to use interactive graphs to show the data insights. However, if you already know many packages in R or Python you can easily build the dashboard or the interactive graph yourself without paying quite a lot to use this tool.

Tableau [Online] is being used across a big part of our organization, especially on the revenue and marketing side. Tableau has been integrated with our data warehouse as well as a variety of other data sources. It allows us to visualize big and complex datasets in a way that makes the data easy to understand for all users. The power of Tableau is to have dashboards and charts that help users understand the story behind the numbers, even when they are less familiar with the original dataset.
  • Visualize complex information in an easy way
  • Allowing publishers/users to present data amongst multiple different dimensions
  • Having integrations with underlying datasets that allows for scheduled refreshes of the data
  • Reduce barrier of entry for new users i.e. make it more intuitive for new users to join Tableau as a publisher
  • Mobile version is not as easy to navigate at the online/desktop version
  • Ad-hoc reporting
Tableau [Online] is very strong for solid, standardized reporting among a variety of different dimensions. It's easy to understand and navigate for regular users. There is also a wide variety of charts and visualizations to chose from which makes it relatively easy to tell the story beyond the numbers. Tableau [Online] is less suited for ad-hoc reporting.

Tableau [Online] is primarily used to create, publish and share the reports and dashboards across the organization. Tableau Online is used by the different functions in the organization to access the reports relevant to them. Tableau Online helps get rid to excel based dashboards and reports which at times were not portable and also now the reports and dashboards are updated as soon as the new information is available. Also, it is very convenient to manage who can view or edit each workbook which was not possible with excel based reports.
  • Tableau Online is completely cloud based and that's why the reports and dashboards are accessible even on the go. One doesn't always need to access the office laptop to access the reports.
  • The visualizations are interactive and one can quickly change the level at which they want to view the information. For example, one person might be more interested in looking at the country level performances rather than client level. This is intuitive and one doesn't need to create multiple reports for the same.
  • The feature to ask questions in plain vanilla English language is great and helpful. For quick adhoc fact checks one can simply type what they are looking for and the Natural Language Programming algorithms under the hood parse the query, interpret it and then fetch the results accordingly in a visual form.
  • Mobile experience is not at par with the desktop experience. The functionality set is limited and the UX is not that great. So this needs to be improved in leaps and bounds.
  • It's unintuitive to create dashboards for a new user. There is a long learning curve in order to figure out how to get different things done with Tableau. So the learning curve is long as of now.
  • Tableau Online still doesn't get the entire gamut of Tableau Desktop features. With the world moving towards cloud, the entire feature set has to be present in Tableau online as well.
Tableau Online is great boon for the people who keep on travelling and now they don't require to access their laptops in order to access the latest information or reports. Further, with Tableau Online, it's easy to distribute the reports and one can use different cuts within a report as per their requirements.
Also, in organizations where data is sensitive and one department's data should not be accessible to others, Tableau Online works wonders as now the report owner/administrator can manage the access to each individual report or workbooks within a report as well.

I work in HR and I use Tableau Online to gather data analytics across multiple different functions under the HR umbrella. I use it primarily to track KPI measures we've established as well as weekly/monthly reporting of data that's exported primarily from our HRIS platform, but also from other platforms which support the HR functions. What Tableau has done a great job at is being able to import this data across multiple systems and give us a fantastic user experience in terms of the reporting outputs and automation of reports.
  • user interface with reporting outputs are easy to understand and navigate
  • online dashboards are incredibly helpful to provide 'snapshot' data
  • reporting automation for building custom reports in PPTX
  • Data analytics and statistical modeling are fantastic
  • Can be a steep learning curve for new users
  • Modeling and building algorithms aren't always intuitive and take some testing/retesting to ensure it's working as it should
  • Inability to integrate easily with our HRIS platform. Reports are pulled from HRIS at various intervals and uploaded into Tableau
Literally anything involving data analytics, computational and statistical modeling and/or building algorithms this product is suited for it. It takes in highly complex formulas and the output can be an incredibly engaging visual model that's easy to understand across various stakeholders. Using it to track and measure against established KPIs has been a great benefit and Tableau makes it easy to do so.

Tableau Online is the bridge between our data teams and the business and product teams. It is our primary visualization tool that sits on top of our data sources which we consider our sources of truth. The primary way it adds value is giving us a lot of tools to present different types of data in ways that various type of business stakeholders can best understand and use it. We also use it as the front-end to our in-house sales commission system. Sales reps log in to Tableau Online and can track their performance and commission.
  • It has been very easy for us to connect various data sources to Tableau Online, such as data from Treasure Data, Google Sheets, Redshift, and custom CSVs.
  • Tableau Online's interface is easy to use as a bridge between data teams and other stakeholders who primarily consume data insights and reporting. It is easy to publish dashboards that users can log on to and see and interact with.
  • Tableau, generally speaking, has calculations and other types of data manipulations available which can scale with your own business questions' complexity. It has been great to learn more about Tableau's functionality and find out that we can answer more complex questions we weren't able to answer before by using things they have available such as level of detail functions, order of operation filtering, and data prep.
  • I believe being a skilled creator and an adept user in Tableau Online is not straightforward. It takes time and there is a learning curve. I have personally been to three Tableau conferences and felt like I needed a year of owning our company's Tableau creator license to feel comfortable and deliver powerful insight for our company.
  • The UI available to edit dashboards could improve to be more friendly and modern. It sometimes feels like you are operating in a very rigid environment when editing dashboards in Tableau Online.
  • The options to organize a company's dashboards and assign permissions are also not straightforward and the solutions I am aware of leave me wishing there was more.
Tableau Online is great for an organization that has some people very familiar with owning a creator license who can create, organize, and distribute dashboards across many different teams. In other words, Tableau Online would be good for a company that seriously invests in it internally. Managing the company's Tableau instance and data sources should occupy a significant time of someone or several people's jobs, in addition to insuring users know enough to be able to navigate, discover, and interact with what's available and stay up to date as well. I would strongly recommend that Tableau Online is worth it if it becomes an integral part of a company's data stack. Without such a commitment, I do not see a lot of value coming from Tableau Online aside from the ability to create visualizations/marketing content which could be useful in certain business settings.

We have started to use this software to better report business analytical data that we need to make decisions in the business. It is being used by different departments in the company. It also helps with data visualization. We have better access to the data that we need to make the decisions we need to make.
  • Data Visualization.
  • Drill down into the data.
  • Data exporting.
  • You need to be decently technical to make reports.
  • The average user can view reports but not create them.
  • It would be nice if the user could look at different views without needing to publish so many different reports.
It is the best software I have seen in the data analytics/visualization space. But you do need to have technical people on staff to make it work. It is not something that an Excel power-user can just pick up and use without a learning curve so it is important to have the right people to leverage the software.

We are using Tableau to visualise trends in our time-series datasets to track the impact of our projects. The product is mostly being used by our Experience Design team to investigate whether or not various projects are reaching their design goals. In the past, we made assumptions about the effectiveness of our products and services; however with Tableu and more data-driven approaches we can drill down on our datasets to test these assumptions. The resulting visualisations can be used to demonstrate project status, impact goals, and campaign interventions to key stakeholders.
  • Handles time-series data extremely well, so that correlations can be drawn from different events
  • Well-suited for visualising queries from data warehouses such as AWS RedShift
  • Attractive, slick visualisations
  • Would be nice to see better support for cleaning and consolidating heterogeneous data sources
  • It is possible to restrict access to a data table on a per-record (row) basis, but not possible to restrict access to data on a per-column basis
  • Steep learning curve for people who aren't from a data science background
Tableau is excellent quality; however, it is an expensive product. It would be well-suited for larger organisations that have already been generating large volumes of raw data and wish to extract further insights into trends and correlations. For these organisations the insights provided by Tableau could help steer key business decisions and result in increase efficiencies in operations and informed business growth.

Review of Tableau Online

Score 5 out of 10

Tableau Online was used to share analytics about finance/banking products with customers. This was used by the selected group in the organization to increase the level of engagement for the sales department for selling the product. This was usually used to address the complex pricing grids and hidden charges for personal loans, mortgages etc., with the competitors to make the pricing model as easy to understand as possible for better marketing the products.
  • Tableau Online handle the security areas very well for Operational security, User security, Data security, Network security and Application security.
  • Tableau Online infrastructure performs regular maintenance to ensure system stability, security, and performance. The data centers are equipped with fire suppression and other monitoring systems designed to detect environmental issues and respond to them before they cause an outage.
  • Tableau Online backup media is encrypted and always maintained in a secured facility. Disk-based backups are stored in secured data center facilities. Backups made to external backup providers are encrypted in transit and in storage. Only approved system administrators have access to backups.
  • Data blending has some limitations regarding non-additive aggregates such as COUNTD, MEDIAN, and RAWSQLAGG. Non-additive aggregates are aggregate functions that produce results that cannot be aggregated along a dimension. Instead, the values have to be calculated individually.
  • Tableau only shows the values that are represented in your data. If your data does not contain the complete range of values, the missing values will not be shown. For example, Sales Data for January to July and November through December. If there was no data recorded for August to November and if a line chart is created in Tableau, the missing months will not be shown. An option is to show the missing months to make it clear that there was no data recorded during that time.
  • Null values can sometimes appear in place of the data you want in the view when you use data blending.
Tableau is Yearly charged per user. It is Saas and Multi-Tenancy, secure and no access to other companies and it is maintained by Tableau. It cannot connect to cubes.Tableau Online means you don't have to worry about the scaling - it is just there and works. For those who don't have IT infrastructure to handle it, Tableau Online is a great alternative.

Tableau Online eliminates the need for a server environment, which includes hardware, deployment, and maintenance. Tableau Online can communicate directly with other cloud-based analytics services, such as Google BigQuery and Amazon Redshift. It also has compatibility with Salesforce and Google Analytics. From a cost analysis point Tableau Server environment is less than the Tableau Online considering the starting cost, configuration cost so for small and medium scale industry can go for a Server environment.

Tableau is used in many different departments throughout my organization. It is used in every department from Sales and Engineering to Accounting and Production. Tableau is used to analyze trends in large amounts of data and reveal the patterns locked into the data. It also excels at building dashboards that are able to provide management and other users with dynamic easy to understand visuals.
  • Easy to use and set up
  • Scales well within a growing organization
  • Works well with mobile or cloud based platforms
  • Easy to customize access for a variety of users
  • Customizing a particular look can be challenging
  • Has a bit of a learning curve
I have found that it is well suited for sending reports out to any level in the organization. Executive management used to receive many emails each day with a report, slides, and analysis. Now the majority of those updates and reports all flow through Tableau Online. They are able to get live data and digest and analyze it at their own pace. They are more prepared when they walk in to meetings and find it easier to explain trends with the Tableau Dashboards.
